Apply to Foster Today.

Fosters are life savers.

Unlike other rescues, we are entirely reliant on the support of foster families willing to open their homes and their hearts to pups awaiting their furever home.

You provide the love, warm home, and kindness needed to heal the hearts and minds of our pups until they find a permanent place to rest their head.

We are always looking for long & short term fosters.

Foster FAQs

How long does fostering last?

2-4 weeks is the average length of time. It can be shorter or longer depending on the dog, but this is the most consistent time frame. If the time commitment doesn’t work for you, we often need short-term, weekend, or week-only fosters. Please select what fits best on your foster application.

We kindly ask that if you need a foster takeover, you grant us 72 hours to find an appropriate placement, but understand this is not always possible in certain circumstances.

Do you know the background of the dog I will be fostering?

In 90% of cases, we don’t know very much about the dog’s background and history before they were taken into rescue. Exceptions of course are owner surrenders, but generally it’s a lot of mystery.

What does fostering entail?

Generally, we ask you to commit to welcoming them into your home and treating them as your own. This includes providing them love & patience, as well as the basics of being a good canine citizen (housebreaking, crate training, basic commands). This will also require regular updates and attendance at adoption events to help them find their forever home.

I have dogs, will they be okay with them?

The majority of the dogs we accept into rescue are great with other dogs, having come from environments where they were housed with other pups. However, please remember that the transition into a new home can be stressful for a dog, and they may not always put their best foot forward. Allowing appropriate time for decompression and slow introductions are highly encouraged.

Do you provide supplies and medical care?

True North is entirely donation run. That being said, we provide walking gear (collar, leash, harness, tag & carabiner) for each dog. If available, we can also provide starter food, a crate, and additional supplies based on inventory. All veterinary care is 100% covered by TN at our approved vet partners.

Vet expenses incurred at other facilities will be at the expense of the foster. Any expenses related to the care of your foster dog is considered a donation, and is tax deductible. Just ask us for a receipt!

How does the adoption process work?

We pre-screen all applications and will only send meets for approved adopters. Meets are scheduled at a mutually convenient time and place for both parties. After a meeting, adopters have 24 hours to confirm they would like to finalize the adoption. Please note, all dogs MUST be cleared by TN before they can be passed along to their new owner.

What if I want to adopt my foster?

Fosters have 48 hours to indicate intent to adopt. They must also complete an Adoption application. Adoptions must be finalized within 24 hours of receipt of Adoption contract.

Please Note: True North Rescue will make all final decisions regarding application approvals. i.e.: Fosters are not guaranteed an adoption of their foster dog.
