Looking for some puppy love but not ready for a commitment? Foster for us!

Fostering can last for as short as one week and we love if dogs can stay until they are adopted!  Usually it's about 2-4 weeks.  We need small dog, large dog, senior, adult, and puppy foster homes.   We have many repeat fosters, but are always looking for more - many of our fosters end up adopting!  We have crates and playpens to loan in case you don't have them and need to borrow.

  • We prefer you are 23 years of age or older and live in NYC or New Jersey.

  • All fosters must fill out a foster agreement and agree to the terms.

  • We do not have a foster to adopt program. Dogs are eligible for adoption immediately upon arrival in NYC. If you may want to adopt your foster dog, we recommend filling out an adoption application before picking up your foster so that we are able to process it ASAP. While it is absolutely a wonderful first step, foster approval does not guarantee adoption approval.
  • Most of our dogs are adopted after being seen on Petfinder or Instagram, so we ask that you send us updates on their personality and good pictures!

  • Most of our dogs have private meet and greets with potential approved adopters only. We will introduce you to approved adopters and ask that you set up the meeting at your convenience.

  • We provide all the necessary medication to foster homes. We also supply a collar, harness, leash, and tag( all of which must be returned). Fosters provide everything else.

  • Most dogs arrive in NY with most shots and neutered/spayed.  If they are not, we may ask you to take them to their appointment.  Please let us know ahead of time if you are unwilling or unable to do this, and we can be sure you have a fully vetted dog in advance...  Most puppies do not arrive already sterilized.

  • Fosters provide the dog with exercise, basic obedience, crate (if necessary), and house training.

  • Fosters are responsible for the safety of each foster dog that comes into their care, and for the safety of other dogs and people the dog comes into contact with.

  • Fosters cannot leave their foster dog unattended with infants, children or other dogs.

  • Fosters keep foster dogs on-leash any time they are outside of a home or securely fenced yard.

  • Foster dogs should never be left alone tied up (ex: outside a store).

  • Fosters should immediately notify True North Directors in the event of a missing or sick foster dog.

  • All medical care is covered by True North Rescue.  Our rescue partner is Faithful Friends Animal Hospital in Brooklyn.  (718)339-7387.  All visits must be pre-approved by the rescue Directors only.  If you have an emergency, you will always be able to contact one of us on our cell phones.  Fosters may not take any dog to an unauthorized veterinarian or to an appointment without permission.  If you do, we cannot be held liable for expenses.

  • Emergency veterinary visits may be scheduled with VERG or Blue Pearl on an as-needed basis. These must be approved by the rescue directors only.
